Julbo Sunglasses on Offer

As it’s the time of year when quite a few of us head off to the Alps or even further afield in search of some Alpine air, I had a quick look at what was available in technical sunglasses, mainly because it’s a few years since I bought any and I also know that it’s something that interests a lot of climbers and ridge walkers.

In the past, I’ve tended to stick to some of the better-known names that, in my opinion, offer great value. I’m thinking of brands like Bloc in this regard, who have a strong heritage in skiing glasses and goggles. Of course, you can also go to the other end of the price spectrum with Oakley, as I did many years ago with a pair of their early ‘wire’ specs (although their UK website doesn’t seem to list any glasses for mountains activities, other than biking).

Julbo Mountain GlassesA manufacturer that I only came into contact with a few months ago is Julbo. This is a tad embarrassing, as I’ve subsequently discovered that several high-altitude types that I respect are very familiar with Julbo. They’ve also won oodles of awards, especially in the US, including this year’s Outside magazine Gear of the Year. This was for surfing glasses that, among other attributes, float!

I’m guessing that they’ve maybe passed me by, simply because they do seem to have a low profile in the UK and a strong heritage in waterports.

Anyway, I’ve decided that a pair of Julbo’s are going on the Birthday list (even if it’s just a present to myself – don’t all blokes do that!). It may well be one of the simpler pairs (read cheaper!) like the Dolgan – after all, for a promo price of £36, I get technical alpine glasses, removable shades and the option of fitting solar shields if I ever have the luxury of spending a few weeks sauntering around the Dents du Midi! Above & Beyond (who I’ve used quite a bit in the past couple of years) currently have 10% off a good range of Julbo glasses, although I’m not sure how long the offer is on for. There’s a link to the page here – Julbo - and they also have some good info on choosing the right lenses, frames, etc. and what all the options are.

Now doesn’t that get you thinking about standing on an alpine ridge with a sweaty back, a fantastic view and the crunch of icy snow underfoot – it’s nearly a year since I was standing above Madonna di Campliglio and looking across to the Ortlieb Alps, and that’s too long!!
